Amherst County Overview
Amherst County Sheriff and Busted Mugshots
The Amherst County Sheriff's Office handles all law enforcement for the county and is the primary agency for arrest records. When deputies arrest someone in Amherst County, they create a booking record that includes the person's name, charges, arrest date, and a booking photograph. These mugshots are part of the public record. You can request them in writing through a FOIA submission.
Under Virginia Code §2.2-3706(A)(2), adult arrestee photographs taken at initial intake must be released to the public. The Sheriff's Office has five working days to respond to your request. Be specific in your request. Include the person's full name and the approximate date of the arrest. The more detail you provide, the faster staff can locate the record.
The Sheriff's Office also operates the county jail and handles inmate booking. For recent arrests where the person may still be in local custody before being transferred to the regional jail, the Sheriff's Office is the right first contact. For inmates already housed at the regional facility, the Blue Ridge Regional Jail is the place to check.
Blue Ridge Regional Jail Booking Records
Amherst County inmates are housed at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail. The facility serves several counties in the region, including Amherst, Appomattox, and Bedford. Booking records at the jail include inmate photographs, current charges, bond information, and custody status. If you need to know whether someone is currently in custody or was recently booked, the regional jail is a good place to check.
Booking photos become part of the inmate's official file at the time of intake. Those records are available to the public under Virginia's FOIA statutes. Juvenile booking records are not released under any circumstances. Active investigation materials may also be withheld until the investigation is closed.
You can also use VINE to check inmate status at no charge. VINE is the official statewide service for jail custody information and covers most Virginia facilities including the Blue Ridge Regional Jail. You can search by name, sign up for notifications, and get updates when someone is released or transferred.
Amherst County Circuit Court Records
Felony criminal case records for Amherst County are kept by the Amherst County Circuit Court Clerk. The court file for a felony case includes charging documents, proceedings, and the final disposition. Arrest information is often part of those files. You can view records in person at the courthouse in Amherst or submit a written request to the Clerk's Office. The Clerk follows Virginia's public records laws and must provide records that are not sealed or protected by court order.
Misdemeanor cases are handled by the General District Court, which maintains its own records. Both court systems can be searched through the Virginia Judiciary Online Case Information System. The system is free to use and lets you search by name, case number, or hearing date across most Virginia counties. It shows case status and hearing dates but not booking photos.
Note: Records sealed by court order are not available through any public search. If a case resulted in expungement, the record will not show up in public searches.
Statewide Arrest Records and Mugshot Databases
The Virginia State Police Central Criminal Records Exchange is the official statewide repository for criminal history records. It holds fingerprints, photographs, and criminal history from law enforcement agencies throughout Virginia, including Amherst County. A name-based search costs $15 using the SP-167 form. Turnaround is about 15 days. The exchange is the most complete source of criminal history data in Virginia and covers every county in the state.
Virginia Code Title 19.2, Chapter 23, at law.lis.virginia.gov, establishes the legal framework for the Central Criminal Records Exchange. Section 19.2-392 requires that fingerprints and photographs be taken by police authorities during the booking process. This is why mugshots exist as public records in Virginia.
The Virginia Department of Corrections Offender Locator is also available for searching individuals in state prison custody. The database includes offender photographs and current facility information. It only shows VADOC inmates, not local jail detainees. For those recently arrested and still in county custody, the regional jail is the right place to look.
VINE is the official statewide service for checking local jail custody status. The system is free and available 24 hours a day at vinelink.com.
FOIA Requests in Amherst County
Virginia's Freedom of Information Act is the legal tool for getting public records from government agencies in Amherst County. The statute at Virginia Code §2.2-3706 covers law enforcement records specifically. It requires mandatory release of adult mugshots taken at intake, criminal incident information for felony offenses, and identity and charge information for adult arrestees. Agencies must respond within five working days.
Records that can be withheld include active criminal investigation files, juvenile records, victim and witness identities, and confidential informant information. If a mugshot would endanger an ongoing investigation, the agency can hold it back. Once the investigation no longer requires secrecy, the record must be released. If your FOIA request is denied without a good reason, you can challenge the denial in circuit court or seek guidance from the Virginia FOIA Advisory Council.

Under Virginia Code §§19.2-392.5 through 19.2-392.17, certain individuals with eligible convictions can petition to have those records sealed. Sealing is different from expungement.
